I saw a two Robins at work today and they was carrying nesting material, I watched them for around ten minutes and found were they was taking it, so after work I called back up with the camera but it started to rain before I got there, I sat in the car for nearly an hour and not once did they show I think possibly because it was raining the nesting material might be damp so they packed in till it dries again!

I made a unplanned trip into Brisbane's Fortitude Valley yesterday to Kathmandu outdoor gear store for a pair of hiking boots. They were having a sale and my boots are 24 years old and new hiking boots are VERY expensive ! "The Valley" as it is known used to be a suburb but is now connected to the Brisbane CBD and a sort of CBD of it's own but with a very different atmoshere. It is Chinatown ! great eating places, cafes, asian shops. An interesting place to spend a day or have a meal in the evening but different story late at night with a heavy police presence specially in the early hours of the morning, drunks, brawls, lots of nightclubs open till early morning, drug addicts and dealers, homeless.............you wouldn't know if you were there during the day

Coorparoo Station where I catch the train into Brisbane and on to Fortitude Valley

Out of Brunswick Station at the Wickham Street exit and looking toward Wickham St & Brunswick intersection

The part of Wickham St closed to traffic

Looking back at the Wickham St train station crossing where I left the train

I could not remember which street was Ann St where the Kathmandu store is so I turned right into Brunswick St

oddly there is a carparking station in there so cars drive in here butonly a short distance

Turning back to the Brunswick & Wickham St intersection where I came from.
I am in the wrong street.......it is Anzac day today so there are banners across the street

I now have a Canon 100-400mm L IS f/4.5-5.6 lens to go with the 7D, almost set-up for my birding at Bowra.
This too is a secondhand purchase from ebay, pretty heavy at 2.25kg plus the camera so hand holding is a bit of an issue. Probably need a monopod.

I need to take some more test shots and do a fair bit of practising and getting to know this new set-up.

I feel the lens is not as sharp as the 70-200 L IS f/4 but when adjusting the sharpness in the 7D by 2 points It seems okay.
Both these shots were taken handheld, quick opportunistic shots outside my house on the street, straight out of the camera, no processing at all. One with 0 sharpening the other with 2 points in camera sharpening.

I have just taken delivery of a Canon 7 D, second hand but still with a few months warranty on it.
A friend who has used a 7D for some time, checked it out for me and it looks good.
Now to read the manual and learn how to use it. Quite a different set up with the buttons. The 19 focal points should help get those birds in flight and the 18 MP should enable me to have bigger files after cropping as heavily as I have to with small birds taken with the 70-200 L IS f/4
It has 8 frames per second shooting and HD video recording for getting those little bees in action.
If the rain ever stops I be out there testing it !

Hi everyone, I am still on this planet but only just !!!

What a few weeks it has been.
First my AFIAP honours application took over my life. It had to be at the Chairperson's by 29.Feb 12
FIAP's requirements causing me all sorts of headaches. A 7 page dossier( in triplicate plus a copy on CD) had to be prepared listing all the acceptances/awards obtained in FIAP approved salons. Requirement: min. 30 acceptances in 10 FIAP approved salons, with 10 different works in 5 different countries, ( I had 64 acceptances with 26 different works, in international 11 salons,in 8 differnt countries) It almost drove me around the twist sorting though months and months of records, the dossier needing verification from an approved Verifying Officer. Thank goodness for the mountains of help Denise, my VO, gave me or I would have given up.
The biggest problem was FIAP requiring the submission of 5 high quality prints, of archival quality for their collection, which had done well in the FIAP approved salons. They had to be a precise 30x40cm print.
None of my images are that size, so it took ages to find out how to get this done.
Pia, who does my printing, helped via email. I placed the images on a black 29.7x40cm document,to suit the A3 paper Pia was using, which had to be a different resolution to the image as otherwise the image was too small on the document. The finished file was sent then to Pia who in the end confessed she could not print that format afterall. She had tired, sorry.
So back to the drawing board, cheking on-line printing services. They all used the old measurements and I had to re-do the 5 files placing them on a 30x 40 cm black doc and then on a 12x18 " white document so the printer could print on the standard 12x18" paper. The 5 files were emailed and a few days later the prints arrived. Not usable, they had a distinct red cast which the prints from Pia did not have. Complained, offer of refund if prints sent back, postage too dear to bother for the few $ I would get back.
Find new printer !! Go by another recommendation and sent 3 files to see if this time they turn out as they should. They were in Brisbane so I decided to go and pick them up to save postage as by now my printing bill was balloning.
Beautiful quality prints, so send the other 2 files plus 1 extra for the market as there is a minimum order or it incurs a surcharge.
Back to pick them up next day, a 45 min trip each way !! happy with result.
Now to trim the white document off and write all the info FIAP requires on the back with the B6 pencil they want. No ink, biro etc allowed.
Name, address, title, where taken, when taken and sign. Ever tried writing on Kodak Endura paper with a pencil ??!! Gently, gently go over each letter again and again, hoping it would not show through on the other side. Well I managed to ruin one of them as the writing clearly showed through, so send to printer again and go and pick up once more.......at last all done.
Off to the VO to have the whole application checked, then pack making sure it will not get damaged and off to the post office !!!
A sigh of relieve and a hope to get back to my life, on the net and also out to take some photos. I had been out on a photo shoot since the Little Kookie flew off into the trees !!
But not yet as the next thing the computer comes up with a message "the system has recovered from a serious error " when I start it and recommends downloading a Diagnostic Tool to see if it was software or hardeware that had cause the overnight problem. After printing out the 7 page blurb about how to go about it I decided I would not proceed and take it to the workshop instead.
My old IT man having dissapeared I found someone in the local paper, took it there several days later and hoped for the best. They suggested to install a second internal 500GB hard drive as I was down to 32 GB of space on C drive.
The waiting........at last picked it up at 5pm Tuesday and reconnected the PC.
Next morning full exitiement to get back on the net I turn the PC on just to find the firefox page will not load.
A phone call when the shop opens, a few sugestions of what to do, nothing works so it has to go back to the workshop. I needed to get some photos sent first as I had a deadline, luckily Photoshop and email worked, so it was late afternoon when I got the PC back to the workshop. They fixed it while I was waiting, then home and reconnect and here I am the next morning back on the forum.
Now that is what you call "bad hair days" !!!!!
Glad to be back and hope to go out to take some pictures to post soon but first must move some 45 000 images to the new hard drive.........
